It was the annual Charles Bradley memorial day BBQ throw down, when Charles finally introduced LaRose Jackson to Tommy. "Tommeyy! This is the lady I was telling you about. You gotta hear her sang!" To which LaRose said, "This is the guy you were talking about? He don't look like no funky producer to me. He look like one of them rock & rollers." Well, our friend TNT invited LaRose and CB back to the old Dunham Sound Studio and set out to prove just how funky he could be. "What if I told you that curly haired dude over there was the baddest dr ummer you ever heard?" asked TNT to Rose. "Him? You guys are weird." The duets that unfolded that night are on this seven-inch piece of wax: Two instant funky pizza party classics. Dig it.

The renaissance of soul music in recent years has been fueled and ignited by a musical energy that has exploded out of a tightly knit family of musicians in Brooklyn, New York. In their many incarnations, these individuals help to create the dynamic roster of indie phenomenon Daptone Records. Though each artist has toured internationally and all have earned reputations for incendiary live shows, up until now, the legendary Daptone Super Soul Revue in its full splendor has been an experience rarely seen outside of New York City.
Now, for the first time, this stellar group of artists has gathered en masse and mounted busses to bring this dynamic show on the road. This is not your average label showcase. Soul powerhouses Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings and Charles Bradley join forces with the afrobeat juggernaut Antibalas for a non-stop extravaganza featuring Master of Ceremonies Binky Griptite and special performances by the Sugarman 3 and Saun & Starr.
Inspired by the high-energy Stax, Motown, and James Brown revues of the past, and presided over by the true standard bearers of today’s soul music, the Daptone Soul Revue is the show that can’t be missed. This is Soul Excitement!

Just in time for Black Friday, we are proud to present the premier pugilistic wax battle of the 21st Century. In one corner we have Sir Charles Bradley backed by the Salacious Sorcerers of Soulful-Doom, and undisputed pride of Staten Island - Daptone's beloved heavy metal enthusiasts, The Budos Band. Armed with a soulful, merciless version of Black Sabbath's classic ballad 'Changes' - you'd have a better chance in the ring with a hungry Mike Tyson on speed. In the other corner we have Sir Bradley, this time backed by old school cohorts, the Staten Island mercenaries of Funk, Dirt Rifle and the Bullets (the band responsible for such early Bradley hits as, 'This Love in't big enough For the both Of Us', and 'Now That I'm Gone'). The Bullets come out swinging with ‘Ain't it a Shame.’ In what should be considered the other A-side, this heavy new original tune is filled with the raw energy harnessed on classic Bradley singles, which can only be described as TKO caliber Razzle Dazzle.
"Changes" / "Ain't It A Shame"

Since the release of 2011’s award winning debut, No Time for Dreaming, Charles Bradley has transformed from a rising star in the Daptone galaxy into a bona-fide headliner, now affectionately known across the globe as "The Screaming Eagle of Soul." The raw emotion and soulfulness of Bradley's voice lifts him up among the greats of the golden age of Soul - Otis, JB, Wilson Pickett, and Darrell Banks. Anyone who has had the privilege of hearing him sing has experienced how Bradley can captivate an entire audience with a simple "Ooooo..."
Bradley and writer/producer/multi-instrumentalist Thomas “TNT” Brenneck returned to Dunham studios and recorded the most exciting Daptone release to date, Victim of Love. On this album, Bradley moves past his "Heartaches and Pain" to the great promise of hope and love. Though quite at home among the music that has affirmed Daptone as the world’s #1 authority on Soul Music, Victim of Love proves to be a genre-bending masterpiece, picking up where the early 70’s Temptations left off and edging boldly forward into psychedelic soul exploration.
Rolling Stone was at this past SXSW's Daptone Records Super Soul Revue taking some behind the scenes of shot and trailing Charles for his day. Check out the full album here.

Set To Make Austin, TX Debut As An Official SXSW Showcase

The Sugarman 3 & The Como Mamas

Brooklyn’s House of Soul is set to bring The Daptone Records Super Soul Revue to Austin, TX for the first time. Presented by BMI, the official SXSW showcase will take place on Thursday, March 14 at ACL Live at The Moody Theater and will feature Daptone’s biggest names in a non-stop, all night show.
The label’s first lady and house band Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings will be joined on the bill by “The Screaming Eagle of Soul” Charles Bradley, Staten Island’s afro-soul instrumentalists The Budos Band, cinematic funk & soul sextet Menahan Street Band, organ-driven soul & groove of The Sugarman 3 and a cappella gospel trio The Como Mamas. The Super Soul Revue premiered last November at the Bear Creek Music & Arts Festival in Florida and most recently headlined a night at the Sydney Festival in Australia this past January.
Fiercely independent Brooklyn-based label Daptone Records has been delivering the New Sound of Old Soul since the turn of this century and has established itself as a place where quality, heart and feeling trump all. Founded by Dap-Kings bandmates Gabriel Roth and Neal Sugarman, they are based in a house in Bushwick, Brooklyn where the label's storied analog studio takes up the first floor.
Literally built with the help of their stars--Sharon Jones helped with electrical wiring; Charles Bradley showed them how to install radiators; and future members of The Budos Band helped knock down walls and jack up the sagging ceiling afterwards—the “House of Soul” continues to be one of the most consistent labels a decade plus into their story. To hear Roth tell it, the secret to their success is simple: "We were able to stay rooted in this idea that people want to hear good music. And that’s our business plan: We’re gonna try to make really good records. Period."
The first single, "Strictly Reserved for You" (off Charles Bradley's upcoming full-length, Victim of Love) was released today. Listen to the stream here!
Charles and His Extraordinaires will hit the road this spring in support of the album, including stops at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and a very special show at the Apollo Theater, the same spot Charles saw James Brown sing when he was a kid. Dates and ticket info can all be found on the Tour Page.
Just announced! Charles Bradley & The Extraordinaires will be playing the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival this year! More info, full lineup, and tickets can all be found on nojazzfest.com.
Most artists appreciate their audiences, just as many are grateful for them, but few artists love their fans as much and as sincerely as Charles Bradley. “I want them to know how much they have helped me grow," notes Bradley when discussing Victim of Love, the follow up to his widely praised debut album No Time For Dreaming. The “Screaming Eagle Of Soul” is set to release the 11-track set April 2 on Daptone Records imprint Dunham Records.
By now, Bradley’s remarkable, against-all-odds rise has been well-documented – how he transcended a bleak life on the streets and struggled through a series of ill-fitting jobs – most famously as a James Brown impersonator at Brooklyn clubs – before finally being discovered by Daptone's Gabriel Roth. The year following the release of No Time For Dreaming was one triumph after another: a stunning performance at South By Southwest that earned unanimous raves; similarly-gripping appearances at Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits, Newport Folk Festival and Outside Lands (to name just a few); and spots on Year-End Best Lists from Rolling Stone, SPIN, GQ, Paste and more.
Victim of Love is a continuation of that story, moving past the 'heartache and pain' and closer to the promise of hope. Where the last record opened with the apocalyptic "The World (is Going Up in Flames),” Victim begins with the “Strictly Reserved for You,” a track where Bradley grabs his girl, jumps in a car and hits the highway for a romantic getaway. "You Put The Flame on It" sees Bradley backed by a horn chart that sounds like it was lifted from a lost Four Tops single. And on “Victim of Love,” the track that lent the album its name, Bradley sings over a gentle acoustic guitar, "I woke up this morning, I felt your love beside me.”
The new album also brings a broader musical scope. Where Dreaming hewed close to the rough-and-ready R&B sound Daptone has become known for, Victim is stylistically more restless, edging closer into the kind of psychedelic soul The Temptations explored in the early '70s. "People are not going to expect this. There's a lot of psych influences on this record, a lot of fuzz guitar," notes Thomas Brenneck of Menahan Street Band, Bradley's producer, bandleader and co-writer. "Confusion” most exemplifies the new direction of the album, opening with an echo-drenched vocal and charging rhythmic cadence.
The album’s closing track "Through the Storm" best summarizes Victim’s message. Over a deep gospel groove, Bradley expresses his gratitude – to his fans, his friends and to God – for their support, their dedication and their devotion. "When the world gives you love," he sings, "It frees your soul."
This is the new message of Charles Bradley, the Bradley who has emerged from the heartache stronger and more confident, overflowing with love to share. This is Charles Bradley, victim of love -- gratefully returning the joy that has been given to him.

"Heartaches and Pain," the new single from 62-year-old soul singer Charles Bradley, was written during a time of great sorrow. "Tom [Brenneck] and I wrote the song as a way to help me heal from my brother's passing," says Bradley. "It was a heartbreaking loss for me. The loneliness and pain I felt during that time is felt in the video [directed by Poull Brien], as is the love I have for my big brother." The cut appears on the reissue of his recent album No Time For Dreaming, which includes covers of Neil Young's "Heart of Gold" and Nirvana's "Stay Away."
